How to use this German keyboard

Write or paste text in the editor. Click a character to insert it at your cursor, or select text first to replace it. Copy text copies the whole editor. Clear removes it; Undo can restore the last change.

Example to try

Grüße aus München! Wie heißt du?

Type ä, ö, and ü

Click the umlauted vowel you need, or select an ordinary vowel first to replace it. Examples include Mädchen, schön, and für. Uppercase mode changes the available keys without changing text you have already written.

Enter ß or ẞ

The lowercase keyboard includes ß and the uppercase keyboard includes ẞ. This is a character-entry choice. The editor does not automatically rewrite words or decide whether ß, ẞ, ss, or SS is appropriate.

Use quotation marks

The keyboard includes „ and “. Click an opening mark, write the quotation, then insert its closing mark. Your document font controls how these characters look.

Other ways to enter these characters

On a Mac

In supported Mac apps, hold a letter key and choose its accented form. Availability varies by app.

In Microsoft Word for Windows

In Word for Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + colon, release, then u to enter ü. Use the corresponding letter for ä or ö.

Official instructions: Apple’s accent-entry guide and Microsoft’s Word accent shortcuts.

Before you leave

The editor does not translate, proofread, or save your writing between visits. Copy text you want to keep before refreshing. If copying is blocked, select the text and use your device’s Copy command.
